After 1 year of waiting, a young solo artist under THEBLACKLABEL, Jeon Somi, came back with her new song: What You Waiting For? But what did I think of it? let's find out.

Okay, now without further ado, let's get into the review.

    THE SONG

So, first of all, what do I think of the song? Well, I honestly really like it. In my opinion, it's quite a 'glow -up' from Birthday, Somi's debut song.

This song starts off with a soft xylophone instrumental, but by the end, the song sounds like something you would hear at a disco or a party.

This song hasn't been out for such a long time, but the song has still been stuck in my head for a while.

One of my favourite parts of this song would probably be the pre-chorus. I really love the melody of this part and I love Somi's vocals at this part.

Speaking of Somi's vocals, I really like them in this song. I really think that Somi's vocals have improved since her debut song and it shows.

Now for something that I don't really talk about in my reviews; the producing. So, I'm pretty sure that this song was produced by Teddy, who also happens to be Blackpink's producer. (Click here for my review of Blackpink's How You Like That)

Now, say what you want, but a lot of Blinks like to point out Teddy's repetitive structure when producing songs. However, in this song, I didn't see a problem with it. An example of this is that, in most of Blackpink's songs, they don't really have proper lyrics for a chorus, but this song did, which I'm quite happy about. Besides, the chorus of this song is very catchy as well. So, basically what I'm saying is that I am quite happy with the producing for this song.

Another thing that I quite like about this song is the line 'Ring the alarm' I think we can all agree that this line, in particular, was quite iconic.

Now, before I conclude this section, I'd just like to mention one thing that caught me off guard with the song, and that is, the ending of the song. And no, I'm not saying this as a joke, but the end of the song did surprise me.

So, the first time I listened to this song when the song ended I was kind of shocked. I thought there was going to be more to the song but there wasn't. To me, the song ending was so abrupt and sounded a bit weird, but I got used to it eventually. But apart from this, I really liked this song.

So, my overall thoughts on this song are that I think I like it more than birthday (even though I like them both a lot.) and I will definitely be listening to this song a lot.

    THE CHOREOGRAPHY / PERFORMANCE

Now for the choreography and performance. So, what do I think of the choreography? Well, I think I can safely say that it's not one of my favourites.

This choreography is quite a simple one, and although it's not my favourite choreo ever, I don't have a problem with the simplicity of it.

I think that this song is focused more on vocals, and it shows because as I was watching one of Somi's live performances, her vocals were really stable, and I believe the simple choreography could be a reason for that.

So, even though the choreography doesn't look very complicated, I think that's okay, because then again, this is only Somi's first comeback, and I hope that as Somi improves, we will see more complicated choreographies.

Now, what did I think of the performance? Well, when Somi was performing, to me it looked like she was enjoying herself, even though some people say otherwise.

Also, something I will point out is that in this particular performance from Somi, I believe she made a small mistake in the choreography, but at first watch, I didn't even notice it, because Somi acted as if everything was normal, even if her dancers noticed. Professionalism at it's finest.

So, overall, what did I think of the choreography/performance for this song? Well, even though the choreography is simple, I'm okay with it, because Somi really got the chance to show off her vocals.

    THE MUSIC VIDEO

Now time for the music video, but first, if you haven't watched it, make sure to watch it above.

So, this music video is a lot different to other K-Pop music videos, in the sense that it's not colourful like other music videos (For example, compared to Birthday's Music Video, the music video for What You Waiting For is really not the most colourful thing ever.) and also, the music video doesn't really show a lot of choreography.

For these reasons, and for others, a lot of people are saying that this comeback is too 'Western' but I don't think it's a problem, I enjoyed the song, I enjoyed the music video, so I don't see an issue.

Also, I would analyze the music video, but that definitely isn't my strong suit, so, let's talk about my favourite parts of the music video instead.

    Number One — Somi's Outfits

Somi - What You Waiting For Outfit With Headpiece

So, let's be honest, after Birthday Era, we were all disappointed with the outfits, so, now that What You Waiting For is here, and we finally got some decent clothing, I had to talk about it.

(If you want to find out more about some of Somi's looks in this music video, click here )

I love all the outfits in the music video, but my favourite has got to be the one in the picture above. I just love the dress and I love the headpiece that goes with it. All I want to say is thank you to the stylist who gave Somi some good outfits this time.

Number Two — The Glitter Scenes

Okay, next up is the glitter scenes. I really like these scenes because they make the music video a lot more fun and exciting. I think that they were a nice addition.

Number Three — The Party Scenes

Just like the glitter scenes, I like these parts of the music video because they make it look a lot more fun to watch.

So, what was my overall opinion on this music video? Well, despite it not being like 'typical' K-Pop Music Videos, it still has some great aspects to it, and I really like it.

    OVERALL RATING

So, what is my overall opinion on this song? Well, I did really like this song and there were only a few things I didn't like, so keeping this in mind, I'll give this song a 7-8 / 10. Tell me what you guys would rate this song in the comments.

So, that brings me to the end of my review, I hope you enjoyed it. And with that being said,

    Stay Safe,

    Ciao xx
