Blinks this year were all celebrating because Blackpink finally gets a second comeback this year! However, when it came out, some people were not too pleased. But what did I think of this song? Let's find out.
But first, if you enjoy my content, make sure to subscribe to my blog by email! Also, if you want the video version of any of my blog posts, make sure to subscribe to my channel, YeonJunie, where you'll find all of my video reviews.
Okay, now without further ado, let's get into the review.
THE SONG
First things first, what did I think of the song? Well, at first, I didn't listen to the song, and only looked at YouTube comments, and after having no luck in the YouTube comments of the official music video (if you know, you know 🙂) I decided to look at other videos like lyric videos and line distributions.
In the comments of those videos, lots of people were extremely disappointed with the song. Lots of people hated it, lots of people loved it. I even found a very mixed opinion on this song here:
How You Like That Pt.2? Could someone explain that to me? |
But anyway, when I finally listened to the song, I actually really liked it. I thought I would hate it because of what people said in the comments, but that was actually the opposite.
A lot of people said that the song was boring, too simple, etc. I honestly don't think so, I mean yes, it may be confusing (where is the chorus in this song?) and it is simple since the melody stays the same throughout pretty much the whole song, but I really like it for that.
Also, another thing I like about this song is how easily Selena fits her lines in.
In this song, since it is both Selena and Blackpink's song, it's as if Selena is the fifth member of Blackpink. Her lines fit in perfectly, and I like that she sings for more than one part of the song.
Now, speaking of parts, the beloved Line Distribution. This is the line distribution:

So yeah, it's not too bad if you just ignore the fact that the difference between the highest and lowest lines is 20 seconds.
But honestly, I can't help but be disappointed. Blackpink's vocalists got the least lines in a vocal song? I just don't understand. Honestly, I think if YG wants Jennie to become a Vocalist and Lisa the Main Rapper, he should change the positions of Blackpink altogether. He could stop a lot of complaints.
However, a YouTuber called PinkBangtan did a review of this song and changed the line distribution, so, you guys should check it out here.
But anyway, as for the line distribution, I'm a bit disappointed, and I hope it can be better the next time they have a comeback (if they do... cough YG cough)
Now for the next part of the song that I want to talk about briefly. The lyrics.
So, to be honest, the lyrics of the song didn't' really bother me too much until Lisa's rap parts came. I just don't know what was going through the writers' heads when they wrote this...
Snow cone chilly, get it free like Willy (Oh) In the jeans like Billie, you be poppin' like a wheelie
Brr, brr, frozen, you're the one been chosen Play the part like Moses, keep it fresh like roses (Oh)
Oh, and don't forget these lines...
Keep it movin' like my lease up Think you fly, boy, where your visa? Mona Lisa kinda Lisa Needs an ice cream man that treats her (Hey)
Okay, these lyrics may not seem bad to you. But to me, I don't know what kind of message they were trying to get across when writing this.
One line that really confuses me is the Mona Lisa Kinda Lisa line. In an Ice Cream M/V Reaction Video, I saw someone explaining it in the comments. Here it is:
A+ for the analysis |
I don't know why, but I just found it a bit funny how creative the explanation of this line is compared to the line that we actually got. But maybe that's just me.
Overall, some of the lyrics are a bit weird, but I can look past it.
So, what is my overall opinion on this song? Well, even though others think differently, I do really like this song, and I will definitely be listening to it again.
THE CHOREOGRAPHY
Now time for the choreography, except, there isn't any.
Yep, this again.
So, if you read my Review of BTS's Dynamite, you would know that that song didn't have any choreography either.
So, since there isn't any full choreography yet, I can't review it. So... if you want to see my review of this choreography, the make sure to stay tuned on my blog for my End of Month Review for September 2020.
But until then, let's move on.
THE MUSIC VIDEO
Now for the music video. But first, if you haven't watched the music video for this song, then make sure to watch it above.
So, what did I think of this music video? Well as per usual, it's great.
Let's be honest, Blackpink's music videos are just great, and so high quality. This music video is no different.
Something that impresses me in this music video is that Selena and Blackpink were in different places because of you know what, but they still managed to make the music video look like they were both in the same place.
The Ice Cream music video has a very 'pink' and 'candy' aesthetic to it, and I really like it. All of the colours work together really well and overall the music video just really fits the song.
Okay, so now that you know the overall vibe of the music video, let's talk about some certain parts of it.
First of all, the outfits.
So yeah, I have to talk about the outfits when I'm reviewing a music video, because if the outfits in a music video are WeIrD, then I don't think it will matter how high quality the overall music video is.
So, what did I think of the outfits in this music video? Well overall, I really like them. In this music video, I don't think I saw any outfits that I really didn't like. I mean, even Selena's outfits were great. However, some outfits I didn't love were these ones:
This Jennie Outfit, It's growing on me, but when the teasers came out I didn't really like it... |
This Rosé Outfit — I think it's just the skirt, to be honest, It reminds me of a bird and I feel guilty for thinking that way 😅 |
So yeah, those were the outfits I didn't love, so let's take a look at the outfits that I particularly like.
These are my favourite outfits:
I'm sure I could find more outfits that I like, but I think you get the idea now.
Another thing that I will mention is the wigs.
Now, I'm not complaining about the wigs, but YG did go crazy with the wigs and weaves this comeback. But I will admit that I liked the wigs in Ice Cream better than I liked Lisa's pink wig in HYLT. So, nice job YG 👍🏾
So yeah, I think that's pretty much all I have to say about the music video. So, overall, I really like this music video, I don't know if I like it better than the music video for How You Like That, but leave your opinions in the comments below!
WHO OWNED THIS SONG?
So, now for who owned this song. So, who did I think owned this song, well if I'm being completely honest, I think the person who owned this song was...
Selena
So, I don't know if you guys were expecting a Blackpink member, I don't know if you guys agree, but I honestly think that Selena owned this song.
I think that this song suits Selena and her vocals very well, and it honestly just seemed like Selena was the 5th member of Blackpink in the Ice Cream M/V.
POLL - WHO OWNED THIS SONG?
However, if you disagree with who I thought owned this song, make sure to leave your opinions on this song in the comments down below, and vote in the poll for who owned this song.
MY OVERALL RATING
Now for my overall rating. So, what did I think of this comeback as a whole? Well, I actually enjoyed it, and although there are some parts of this release that I don't particularly like, I think that the goods outweigh the bads. So, keeping this in mind, I give this song a 7/10. Tell me what you guys think of this song in the comments below.
And that brings me to the end of my review, I hope you enjoyed it.
And with that being said,
Stay Safe,
Ciao xx
